The present invention relates to a pendulus bobbin support for spinning frames and the like, and more particularly to a so-called latch type of holder for hollow cylindrical bobbins.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a novel bobbin holder which is sturdy in construction, positive in action, and adaptable to a wide range of dimensions of bobbins to be supported thereby.
It is another object to provide such a device in which the latching and unlatching action is accomplished in a positive manner without relying on yielding ratchets or detents to control the operation.
Further objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. l is a side elevation, partly broken away and in section, of a preferred embodiment of the invention with a bobbin mounted thereon;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of the cam plate forming part of the rotating means for the latch control mechamsm;
Fig. ,3 is a similar view of the guide plate and seat member for the indexing means; and
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic representation of the various positions of the camming mechanism for the indexing means.
Fig. is a section taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing there is illustrated a cylindrical body member indicated generally by numeral 1 which is of such size as to enter loosely in the bore of a hollow bobbin 2 of conventional form which is counterbored to provide an internal shoulder 3. The body 1 of the bobbin holder is rotatably and universally suspended from a fixed support 4 such as the creel board of a spinning frame by means of a swivel bearing 5 of conventional construction.
Means for releasably retaining a bobbin 2 on the body 1 of the holder is provided in the form of a toggleshaped latch indicated generally by numeral 6 and comprising a pair of arms 7, 8 hinged together by means of a pin 9, and adapted when moved divergently to project through openings 11, 12 in the body 1 for engagement with the internal shoulder 3 of the bobbin 2 as illustrated in Fig. 1.
Means for contracting and expanding the latch 6 is provided comprising a shaft 13 which is mounted coaxially in the body 1 for vertical sliding movement therein by suitable means such as a lower guide plate 14 and an upper guide plate 15 fixed in any suitable manner in said body 1. The shaft 13 is connected to the hinge pin 9 of the latch by means of a yoke member 16 which is swiveled to the lower end of the shaft 13 as indicated at 17.
The upper guide plate 15 is formed with a circular series of equally spaced seats 18 (Fig. 4) with interposed vertical openings 19. The upper end of the shaft 13 is provided with one or more lateral projections or ice vanes 21 which are so positioned as to rest on the seats 18 to define the locking or expanded position of the latch 6, or alternatively, upon being rotatively indexed, to pass through the openings 19 and permit the shaft 13 to move downwardly and allow the latch 6 to contract until the arms 7, 8 are flush with the exterior of the body 1 of the holder, thus permitting removal of the bobbin 2.
Means are provided for reciprocating the shaft 13 to control the latch 6, and coincidentally therewith to 1'0- tatively index the shaft as above set forth. This means comprises a cam plate 22 fixedly mounted in the body 1 and having cam surfaces 23 (Figs. 2 and 4) formed therein in position to engage the upper ends of the vanes 21 and thereby rotate the shaft 13 at the end of its upward stroke. The actuating means for the shaft 13 comprises a collar 24 slidably mounted on the exterior of the body 1 of the holder in position to be engaged by the bobbin 2 as the latter is moved up on the holder and having a tapered form to act as a centering means for the upper end of the bobbin. The collar 24 has a plurality of pins 25 projecting inwardly through slots 26 of the body 1 in position to engage a thrust ring 27 fixed in any suitable manner on the shaft 13.
A spring 28 located between the pins 25 of collar 24 and the upper guide plate 15 urges said collar downward. A second spring 29 located between the thrust ring 27 and the guide plate 15 urges the shaft 13 toward its lower position Where retraction of the latch 6 is permitted. The retracting action of the latch with downward movement of the shaft 13 is brought about by engagement of the arms 7, 8 thereof on the lower ends 31, 32 of the slots 11, 12 in the body 1. This retracting movement is limited by the engagement of the side of the arm 7 with the bottom 33 of the fork of the arm 8, the parts being so dimensioned that when this engagement takes place, the outer ends of the arms 7, 8 of the latch are fiush with the outer surface of the body 1 of the holder.
Expansion of the latch 6 into operative position upon upward movement of the shaft 3 is accomplished by the engagement of the outer ends of said arms with the upper ends 34, 35 of the slots 11, 12, the adjacent portions of the body 1 being preferably bent inwardly as indicated to facilitate this operation.
In operation, starting with the parts illustrated in Fig. 1 with the bobbin 2 mounted on the holder, and the vane 21 supported in a seat 18 of guide plate 15 as shown in full lines in Fig. 4, upward movement of the bobbin 2 by the operator transmitted through the collar 24, pins 25 and thrust ring 27 to the shaft 13 causes the vane 21 to move upwardly and engage the aligned cam member 23 of plate 22 whereby the vane, with shaft 13 is rotated to the position indicated by (a) in Fig. 4. This brings the lower end of the vane 21 into alignment with an opening 19 of the guide plate 15 so that when the bobbin 2 is Withdrawn by the operator the shaft 13 moves downwardly until its movement is arrested by the limit of the collapsing movement of latch 6 as provided by the abutting engagement of the arms 7, 8, whereby the vane 21 occupies the position (b) in Fig. 4.
The ends of the vane 21 are ofiset from each other as illustrated to provide an intermediate camming section 36, and as the vane passes down through the opening 19, the cam 36 engages the adjacent edge of the seat 18, thus further indexing the shaft 13 into the position indi cated at (b) in Fig. 4.
Since at this time the arms 7, 8 of the latch are withdrawn flush with the body 1 further downward movement of the bobbin 2 is unopposed, and it can therefore be removed by the operator.
When a fresh bobbin is installed, the upward movement of collar 24 by application of the bobbin causes aevacea the shaft 13 tobe-moved upward after the shoulder 3 of the bobbin has passed. beyond theslots 11, ,12 of the body I. This upward movement of shaft 13 causes the vane 21 to engage the next cam element 23' of the plate 22 and, thereby to .be-rotated to theposition (c) in Fig. 4. :Thisbrings the lowerend of the .vane' over the nextseat 18' so that on release of the bobbin ,by the operator the vane21 is received-on saidseatpas indicated at (d) in Fig.4.
Since the .upward movement'of shaft 13 hasexpanded the latch 6 .by engagement of the arms 7,1 8 with the inwardly directed portions 34, 35 of the body 1, the bob- -bin,2.is supported by engagement ofthe latchwith the internal shoulder 3 of the bobbin.

A bobbin'holder as set forth in claim 1 inwhich the projection on .theshaft is in the form of an axially extending camming vane, and indexing means comprises a cam plate fixed inlsaid body spaced upwardly :from the-guide plateand having a circularseries of inclined cam surfaces cooperating with said vane when the shaft is moved upward to rotate the shaft from-aposition where the vane is aligned withanabutment seat pf the guide plate to a position where the vane is aligned with the adjacent opening in saidguide plate and vice versa.
3. A bobbinholder as setforthin claim2 inwhich saidvane is formed with a camming portion cooperating with the guide plate as it enters an opening therein to rotatively index the shaft to bring theprojectiouinto vertical alignment with the next inclined cam surface of the cam plate.
