Abstract

685,595. Belt abrading machine. JOHANNSEN, S., and JOHANNSEN, H. C. April 2, 1951 [April 3, 1950], No. 7567/51. Class 60. In a belt abrading or belt sanding machine comprising two abrading or sanding belts arranged side by side and travelling in opposite directions, two sanding shoes are mounted on a centrally pivoted member and arranged to press one against each of the two belts, a handle being provided for moving the centrally pivoted member up and down and thereby varying the total pressure exerted by the shoes on the belts. A belt sanding machine comprises a shaft 1 on which are a fast pulley 2 and a loose pulley 3 around which run sanding belts 4, 5 supported at the other end of the machine by a loose pulley 6 and a fast pulley 7, the latter being driven by a pulley 8 and V-belt 10 from a motor shaft 9. Pulleys 6, 7 are on shafts 12, 11 arranged in tensioning devices 13, 14 for ensuring correct tensioning and true running of the belts 4, 5. One belt may have coarser abrasive than the other. On a shaft 15 is arranged a slide 16 to which are secured rods 17, 18 interconnected by a cross-piece 19 to form a bracket carrying a centraUy pivoted member forming two swinging diverging arms 20, 21 each having at its lower end an adjustably and pivotally mounted sanding shoe 22, 23. A handle rod 24, extending through an aperture in the cross-piece 19, is rotatably guided in a tube 25 secured to the slide 16; cams 26, 27 are fixed to the rod 24 which carries at its outer end a knob 28. When the knob 28 is pressed downwards the twin sanding shoes 22, 23 press downwards with equal pressure against the belts. By rotating the knob 28 either arm 20 or arm 21 is pressed down by cam 27 or cam 26, thus increasing the pressure exerted by one shoe and decreasing that exerted by the other shoe. The rod 24 may be telescopic.
