Abstract
Fishing lines, such as braided lines of silk or nylon for trout and salmon fishing, are coated or dressed with a preparation comprising a polymer and/or co-polymer of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinyl nitrile or the like, either with or without plasticising and stabilising agents. The coating may be applied in a succession of thin layers having different characteristics, the innermost layer or layers being in the form of a solution sufficiently dilute to ensure penetration of the line, and the outermost layer having resistance to abrasion. In an example 100 grammes of polyvinyl chloride in powder form are added with stirring to 1200-1400 c.c of stabilised tetrahydrofuran at a temperature near the boiling point of the latter and, when solution is effected, 50 grammes of dibutyl phthalate are added with stirring, followed by 50 grammes of tricresyl phosphate containing finely divided pigment of a suitable colour and in suitable concentration. Finally 2 grammes of calcium stearate in powder form are added. After cooling, the mixture is diluted with from 500 to 1000 c.c. of tetrahydrofuran to obtain a solution of suitable concentration.
