Abstract

685,208. Brushes. BLUE, J. F. A. June 30, 1950 [July 1, 1949; Nov. 3, 1949], Nos. 17475/49 and 28207/49. Classes 19 and 138 (i). A carpet sweeper, vacuum cleaner, textile finishing machine or the like is provided with one or more rotatable brushes each formed of a spindle, and, secured to the spindle, a number of helical and radially projecting flat strips, with non-interrupted outer edges formed of sponge rubber, crepe rubber or foam latex rubber. 'If desired the brush may be provided with bristles between the strips. In Figs. 1 and 2 the brush is carried by a spindle c which at each of its two ends has a roller d fitted, the roller making frictional contact with the treads of the carpet engaging the wheels e. The brush is provided with flat strips f of rubber each strip projecting radially from the roller and forming a partial helix round its spindle. An alternative form of brush, for a vacuum cleaner, is shown in Fig. 3 in which the spindle s is provided with two helical brushing elements, t and t<SP>1</SP>, one on each side of the transverse central line. The brush is fitted in the suction inlet of the machine and is driven by a band u which is passed over a pulley on the suction fan spindle and over a central groove s' in the spindle.
