VACUUM-CLEANER, nnusn.
'Application med september 17, 1924. serial No. 738,114.
' This invention relates to brushes and more particularly to a novel and' improved clothes or hair brush which may be connected to a suitable suction apparatus such as a vacuumv cleaner or blower whereby Athe dust and dirt v may be carried od as the said brush is being used.
One Iof the objects of my invention is to provide a brush head constructed and arrange-d to receive removable sets of brushes or Vcombs including provision for conveying the dust or accumulated matter as the same is loosened by the brushing or ,combingeleL ments.
further object of myinvention is to proa brush head, which may be attached to vit a suction device including a plurality of re-l movable brushing or combing elements, po-
l sitioned on'each side `of aduct or passage into` which the dirt or foreign matter: may be drawn by the suction device as the" said v elements engage the surface being cleaned or brushed. y A
To enable others skilled in the art to fully comprehend the underlying features of my invention that they may embody thesame in the various modifications 'in structure and relation contemplated, drawings depicting a preferred ,form have been annexed as a part of this disclosure and in such drawings, similar reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout all. the views, of whichz Figure 1 is a view showing my invention as used in connection with a suction device such as a vacuum' cleaner. j
Figure 2 is an enlarged, bottom view of the brush head and handle, lation of the bristles to the in the brush head. v
Figure 3 is a view of a comb adapted to be used in place of the brushes as shown by Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a transverse', through ure 2.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate 'corresponding parts throu hout all the'views,'5 designates any suita le suction device or apparatus such as a vacuum cleaner or blower to which a iiexible tube or pipe `6 is attached at one end, the opposite Aend of the tube beng adapted for connection to the end of a handle 7, formed with a'brush head designated in its entirety -by numeral 8. i
central passage sectional view, the brush head as shown by Fig" showing the re#v The brush head is provided with the usual lat top and curved, bevelled sides 9, preferabl handle 7, which communicates with a central passage or trough 10 that extends longitudinally of the bottom face of the brush head. The said trough is closed by curved guard 11, preferably formed of rubber or other resilient material which extends above the bottom surface of the-brush head. The sides of the guard are seated on opposed vlanges 12 and are held in the dovetailed grooves 13. A slot 14. in the top of the e guard,`permits the dust, dirt and other foreignmatter to be drawn intor the chamber or passage 10 and out through the'hollow handle and tube or pipe 6 into the suction device' and in order. to prevent the passage of hair or other matter that might clog the suction apparatus, a strip of gauze 15 is interposed beneath the guard and on the flanges vabove referred to. Of course', it will be readily understood that the guard 11 may be removed from thef front end 16 of the brush head by sliding", the guard outwardly formed integral with the hollow as by enga` ing the depression 17 with the finger or ot erwise.
Disposed on .each 'side of the passagev 10 and itsguard, I have provided a palr of brushing elements in the form of a dovetailed plate 18, having bristles 19, each of said plates being positioned in grooves 'formed in the bottom face of the brush head and on opposite sides of the guard as heretofore described. The plates andthe bristles held therein are likewise removable in the same manner as the guard 11 so theta pair of combs or a singlecomb may be positloned in lace of the bristles.` The comb is pref- 'era ly formed with a plate 20 having teeth 21 so that when "a pair of such combs are used, the brush -head may be used for combin the hair. 4
t will thus be seen from my construction that the brush head lends itself to a ...multiplicity of uses such as for cleaning clothes, in vwhich instance the bristles are.
will tend todraw the matter into-the passage or trough and out through the handle. The brush head is so constructed and arranged that the parts are easily positioned and maybe removed for cleanmg purposes when so desired.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein ma be made. I therefore reserve the right an l privilege of changing the form of the detalls of `construction or 'otherwise alteringthe arrangement of the spirit of the invention or the scope of the correlated parts without departing from the` slotted guard rictionally seated on the flanges, la. hollow `handle communicating with the end of the longitudinal passage,
and a pair of cleaning elements removably positioned in the bottom face of th'e brush he'addand on opposite sides of the said 2. A brush of the class described in combination with a suction device, a brush head having a central longitudinal passage through the bottom face-thereof, a pair of llateral ianges in said passage, af curved slotted guard and a screen friction'ally seated on said flanges, a hollow handle formed with the brush head and communieating with the end of the passage, the botf tonli dface of the brush head having dovetai e ooves on leach side of the guard,l
remova le cleaning elements positioned in said grooves on each side of the guard;
Signed at New York in the county of New York and State of New York this eighth day of July A. D. 1924.
