Abstract
685,059. Circular saws. HARWOOD, P., and JACOB, G. R. Nov. 14, 1950 [Nov. 14, 1949], No. 29053/49 Class 145 (ii). A timber saw has a power-driven circular saw displaced by a hydraulic ram across the length of timber supported by a carriage, to be conveyed at right angles to the plane of the saw. The timber is also supported by pairs of rolls disposed on intersecting axes inclined to one another and arranged on either side of the path traversed by the saw in its cutting operation. The saw 13 powered by an electric motor 11 is carried by carriage 12, the motor also driving a hydraulic pump delivering to a single acting ram 15. The carriage is driven up rails 17 (inclined at about 5 degrees from the horizontal) on V-grooved wheels 16 and additional wheels 18 are provided to engage the underside of the rail supports 17a. The carriage is returned 'by gravity. Valves and limit stops enable the sawtraverse to be started manually by lever 20 and to complete and reverse automatically. A truck 26, Fig. 4, supports the bulk of the work 25 and is urged along rails 27 by continuous rope 28 and winch 29. The work is supported by rollers 31, 32 inclined as shown in front of the blade and a second pair of rollers behind the blade. One of the latter rollers, 34, may be horizontal to help open the cuts to clear the saw. Intermittent support means which may take the form of a belt 35, with a line of dogs 36, may deliver the cut-off work to a further conveyer. The saw guard 13a and the roller assembly in the vicinity of the saw may be lined with wood to prevent damage to the saw blade.
