Abstract

In making coherent chlorinated rubber films having a low permeability for water vapour, an aqueous dispersion of preferably insoluble chlorinated rubber, made by chlorinating an acid aqueous dispersion of unmasticated rubber and containing up to 61 per cent of chlorine and between 5 and 25 per cent of a plasticizer by weight of the chlorinated rubber, is formed into a thin layer, water is evaporated and the residue is coalesced into a homogeneous film without applying pressure or adding volatile solvents or other agents assisting film formation. The dispersion of chlorinated rubber may be made as described in Specification 634,241. The permeability of the film may be lowered by adding to the dispersion a highly polymeric substance, e.g. polyvinyl chloride. The plasticizer may be chlorinated diphenyl or an ester of phosphoric, phthalic or sebacic acid, e.g. dibutyl sebacate. An emulsifier, e.g. casein, "Emulphor O" (obtained by reacting polyethylene oxide with oleyl alcohol), a sulphonated oil or hydrocarbon or an invert soap may be used. Stabilizers, e.g. amines or metal oxides, may be added. Specification 428,456 also is referred to.ALSO:In making coherent chlorinated rubber films having a low permeability for water vapour, an aqueous dispersion of preferably insoluble chlorinated rubber, made by chlorinating an acid aqueous dispersion of unmasticated rubber and containing up to 61 per cent of chlorine and between 5 and 25 per cent of a plasticizer by weight of the chlorinated rubber, is formed into a thin layer, water is evaporated and the residue is coalesced into a homogeneous film without applying pressure or adding volatile solvents or other agents promoting film formation. The dispersion of chlorinated rubber may be made as described in Specification 634,241. Evaporation of water and film formation may be accelerated by infra-red heating. The permeability of the film may be lowered by adding to the dispersion a highly polymeric substance, e.g. rubber, cyclised rubber or polyvinyl chloride. A pigment e.g. titanium white may be added. The plasticizer may be chlorinated diphenyl or an ester of phosphoric, phthalic or sebacic acid, e.g. dibutyl sebacate. Stabilizers, e.g. amines or metal oxides may be added. An emulsifier, e.g. casein, "Emulphor O" (obtained by reacting polyethylene oxide with oleyl alcohol), a sulphonated oil or hydrocarbon or an invert soap may be used. The dispersion may be applied to metal surfaces or to fibrous materials, e.g. paper, cardboard, wood and textiles. Specification 428,456, [Group IV], also is referred to.
