Abstract

775,562. Blown coating. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 1, 1955 [Feb. 1, 1954], No. 2908/54. Class 140. Fabric, e.g. cotton textile fabric, having a porous blown coating of a synthetic resinous polymer such as a vinyl or vinylidene polymer or copolymer is produced by coating the fabric by means of a doctor blade with a composition comprising the resinous polymer, a conventional plasticizer therefor, e.g. tricresyl phosphate, 15-45 per cent of an organic liquid polymer, e.g. polypropylene adipate or sebacate, which has a viscosity of 100-500 poises and which is soluble in the conventional plasticizer in a proportion of 15-45 per cent, preferably 20 per cent based on the weight of the resinous polymer, a solid blowing agent, e.g. " Vulcacel " (Registered Trade Mark), and a gelling agent, e.g. finely-divided silica, an organic derivative of bentonite, sodium, lithium or aluminium stearate, sodium palmitate or calcium ricinoleate; 0.25-2 per cent of the blowing agent based on the total weight of the other ingredients and 1.5-5 per cent of gelling agent based on the weight of the resinous polymer may be employed. A gelling agent consisting of a mixture of aluminium stearate and finely-divided silica in a proportion of 2-3 per cent based on the total weight of the other ingredients is preferably employed. Other ingredients which may be present are a pigment, e.g. titanium dioxide, carbon black or barytes, a stabilizing agent, e.g. calcium stearate, and a solvent, e.g. white spirit. The composition may be spread to a thickness of e.g. 0.01 inch. The coating is gelled by heating in air to e.g. 220‹ C. The blown layer may be coated with a scratch- and abrasive-resistant lacquer.
