Abstract
Concentrated aqueous colloidal dispersions of a fluoroethylene polymer having not less than three fluorine atoms per molecule are made by (1) forming a mixture of a dilute aqueous dispersion of the polymer, 5 to 15 per cent based on the polymer, of a polyethylene glycol phenyl ether dispersing agent, and 1 to 10 grams per gallon of a dilute dispersion of an electrolyte selected from ammonium hydroxide, calculated by weight on its ammonia content, ammonium carbonate, the water-soluble salts of strong acids and weak bases, or mixtures thereof; (2) heating the mixture at a temperature from 60 DEG to 85 DEG C. until the polymer has settled; (3) decanting the substantially clear supernatant liquid; and (4) recovering the concentrated colloidal dispersion. The polyether may be polyethylene glycol mono-p-octyl phenyl ether. Specified salts are ammonium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, lead acetate, and aluminium sulphate. The polymer may be polytetrafluoroethylene, polychlorotrifluoroethylene or copolymers of either tetrafluoroethylene or chlorotrifluoroethylene. The concentrated dispersions may be used for casting films, impregnating paper, textiles, glass fibre materials, or felted materials, or coating paper, glass fibres and fabrics.
