Also in Group XVII Sliver coiling apparatus incorporating a battery of coiler heads comprises means common to each unit thereof for rotating the sliver guides and driving the calender rollers in unison, a support for a can capable of receiving the collective output of the battery, and means operatively associated with said driving means for imparting to the support a motion such that the can is given a circular orbital movement so that each sliver is independently coiled. In the mechanism shown in Figs. 3 and 6, rotary motion imparted to one of two shafts 46 is transmitted through gears 45, 44, sprockets 31, endless chain 30, to each of the sprockets 29 carried by sliver guides 28, and, through a pinion 32, gearing 33, 34; 38, 39; 40, 41; to driving shafts 36, 37, of pairs of calender rollers 26, 27, connected by gear trains 42, 43; in order that any coiler unit may be isolated from the remaining units, the shafts 261 of the rollers 26 are mounted in brackets 65 pivoted at 66 upon brackets 67, in which the shafts of the rollers 27 are mounted, (Fig. 5). As shown in Figs. 9 and11, the shafts 46 also drive duplicate mechanisms in each of which rotary movement is transmitted through a worm and worm-wheel 52, 53, shaft 54, gears 55, 57; 56, 58, shafts 59, 60, to disc-cranks 61, 62, crank pins 63, 64, of which engage bushes 48, 49, in a can support 24. A can 25 mounted on anti-friction balls 47 may be guided into position by means of pegs on its underside co-acting with rails 50, 50, flared at one end.
