Abstract
684,612. Automatic volume control. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Dec. 15, 1949 [Dec. 15, 1948], No. 32233/49. Class 40 (iv). The energizing voltage of a carbon-granule microphone is varied in accordance with its output, thereby effecting volume compression. As shown, Fig. 3, the output from the microphone 41 is fed via the transformer 44 to the amplifying valve 50 whose output is rectified at 60 and after smoothing is applied to the grid of the triode 21 to increase its anode-cathode impedance which is in series with the energizing battery 20 for the microphone. Condenser 19 provides a by-pass for the A.C. output of the microphone. The value of condenser 46 may be chosen so as to cause the compression to be more effective at higher frequencies. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), in which highgain components are used, the amplifier stage 50 is omitted. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the diode 60 is omitted, rectification being effected by the grid-cathode portion of valve 21. Fig. 1 (not shown) indicates an arrangement in which a double-capsule microphone is used in which the output of one capsule is rectified and used to vary a thermionic impedance in the energizing circuit of the other capsule.
