Abstract

684,148. Mechanical switches, without quick action; locking switches. KLIEGEL BROS. UNIVERSAL ELECTRIC STAGE LIGHTING CO., Inc. June 18, 1951. [July 29, 1950], No. 14402/51. Class 38 (v) [Also in Group XXXV] A selecting switch operated by a knob 24 is connected in series with an on-and-off switch 26 operated by a handle 25 and responsive also, it may be, to overload, interlocking mechanism being provided so that the switch 26 cannot be closed while the selecting switch is open. The selecting switch comprises a circle of fixed contacts 20 and a moving contact consisting of a pin 21 mounted in an insulating plate 18 fixed to a two-part spindle 16, 17 that may be moved axially downwards by the knob 24 till the contact 21 is withdrawn from its fixed contact 20 and then rotated to bring the contact 21 opposite any other selected contact, which may then be engaged by pushing the knob upwards. The plate 18 is wider than the space between two fixed contacts so that operation of the knob 24 is impossible if it is incorrectly aligned. In the downward movement of the knob a plate 40 operates a stop 38, a portion 37 of which pushes the handle 25 of the switch 26 into its open position if it is not already there. A number of such selecting switches may be used in a lighting system for theatres (see Group XXXV).
