Abstract
<PICT:0684127/III/1> <PICT:0684127/III/2> In contact apparatus of the type wherein fluid reactants are passed through a chamber containing a bed of solid contact material, e.g. a catalyst, collection and delivery of the reaction products or distribution of the reactants is effected by an assembly of horizontally disposed perforated tubes as indicated generally at 33, Fig. 1. The assembly comprises larger trunk tubes 22, Fig. 4, connected to a header 12 and branch tubes 33 connected to opposite sides of the trunk tubes. Slip joint connections are employed to facilitate assembly and permit free expansion of the tubes. The outer ends of the tubes are supported on an annular ledge 23 on the refractory lining 7 of the chamber. A porous mass of inert material 39, e.g. refractory balls, embeds the tubes and supports the catalyst bed 40. The diameter of the chamber is increased above the normal level of the tubes to facilitate withdrawal of the tubes from the slip joint connections on raising bodily the tube assembly. The apparatus is particularly suitable for the catalytic desulphurization of gasoline, naphtha or other hydrocarbons.
