Abstract

In a method of catalytic steam-reforming liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons in an externally heated tubular reformer, the tubes are filled with particulate catalytic material by delivering air to the lower ends of the tubes under such a pressure as to retard the fall of the material, which is supplied to the top of the tubes. The tubes may be emptied by the same method. The apparatus is that described in Specification 1,036,447, the catalyst lying in the annular space between the tube and an internal axially disposed pipe which opens near the bottom of the tube, which is closed at its lower end. The pipe serves to deliver air to the tube during filling and emptying.
