Abstract
684,065. Electromagnetic interrupters. GENERAL RAILWAY SIGNAL CO. April 3, 1951 [April 13, 1950], No. 7701/51. Class 38 (v) [Also in Group XXXVIII] A code signalling system (see Group XXXVIII) employs local balance-wheel oscillators to drive relay distributers. As shown, the energization of a U-shaped magnet 34-36 holds an armature 37 against non-magnetic stops 40, stressing a spiral spring 32. When the magnet is released, the armature oscillates, alternately operating and releasing two sets of contacts 41, 42, 45, 46 and 43, 44, 47, 48 by means of a cam 49. In the system described, four complete oscillations take place on each release of the magnet. In a modification, Fig. 16 (not shown) with a heavier moving system and a heavier spring, the non-magnetic stops are secured by magnetic screws and washers, and this enables the attracted position of the armature to be along the centre line between the pole pieces. In this construction, the weight associated with the armature is not secured directly to the shaft but is coupled to it frictionally and by means of a spring to avoid damage when the armature hits the stops.
