Abstract
683,398. Linear-dimension gauges. SOC. D'ETUDES MECANIQUES ET D'ORGANISATION INDUSTRIELLE S.E.M.O.I. Nov. 7, 1949 (Dec. 24, 1948; July 7, 1949], Nos. 28469/49 and 28470/49. Class 106 (ii). (Also in Group XXX] A device for measuring the depression of a railway sleeper when a rolling load is passing over it comprises a member 1 which is secured to the sleeper 3 by spikes 2 so that it moves upwardly and downwardly with the sleeper and is slidable relative to a stationary rod 6 which is mounted within a cylindrical guide sleeve 5 at the end of a lateral arm 4 on the member 1, the downward movement of the member 1 being imparted to a cylindrical slider 9, Fig. 3, which is movable upon the rod 6 and is initially located in contact with an abutment 12 on the guide sleeve 5. The slider 9 is provided with longitudinal slits 10 to provide a frictional engagement which holds it in the position to which it is moved. A portion of the lower part of the sleeve 5 is cut away adjacent to a vertical scale 13 which is secured thereon to indicate the distance between the initial and final positions of a collar 11 on the upper end of slider 9. As shown, the lower end of the rod 6 has a head 7 which rests firmly on the ballast 8. The sleeve 5 can be locked temporarily on the rod 6 by a screw 14. In a modification, Fig. 6, two adjustable sliders 17, 19 are employed, the former held on the rod 6 by a set-screw 18 extending through a longitudinal slot in a collar 5 at the end of an arm 4, as in the previous example, and the latter a friction fit on the outside of the collar 5 and set initially with its bottom flange 20 bearing against tongues 21 which extend laterally from the slider 17 clamped on the rod 6. A scale is provided on the sleeve 5. In a further modification a spiked rod which is driven into the ballast at the side of a rail carries a sleeve which is a tight frictional fit thereon and has a tongue extending at rightangles to the supporting-rod, the sleeve being adjusted initially to engage the tongue against the underside of the rail. An adjustable marker slide on the rod is set with its lower edge in abutment with the top of the sliding sleeve on the rod, so that when the sleeve is pushed down, together with its associated tongue, by the passage of a load over the rail, it remains in that position, and the distance between its upper end and the bottom of the marker slide is a measure of the depression of the track.
