[Also in Group XIX] A device for measuring the depression of railway sleepers into the ballast when rolling stock passes thereover, including a double-armed lever 7, with one end 7b placed beneath and in contact with a rail adjacent a sleeper, the other end 7a constituting a pointer moving across a scale plate 4 and second pointer 9 frictionally mounted on the pivot of the lever 7 and moved by a projection 14 on the lever 7 is adapted to provide for rapid adjustment of the device to suit varying heights of rail above the ballast by being made vertically adjustable on a vertical rod 18 of the base 1 and clamped thereto in adjusted position by means such as a wing nut 19 engaging a bolt for tightening a clamp 17 secured to the scale plate on which the lever 7 and pointer 9 are pivoted. The rod has a longitudinal groove 20 to receive the end portion of a pin 21 secured to the plate 4 to prevent the plate turning on the rod, and the rod also has at its upper end a projecting pin closing the end of the groove to prevent removal of the clamp from the rod. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 681,075.
