Abstract

Polyvinyl acetate in granular form is made by dispersing vinyl acetate in an aqueous medium containing an emulsifying agent consisting of one or more partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetates, a peroxide polymerization catalyst, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, and 0.05 to 1 per cent by weight of the total dispersion, of a dispersing agent made by condensing sulphonic acids of aromatic hydrocarbons with formaldehyde and neutralizing to form a salt and which has a surface tension of not less than 50 dynes./cm. at 25 DEG C. in a 1 per cent aqueous solution, heating the dispersion with agitation and separating the granular polymer. The dispersing agent may be the sodium salt of a condensation product of formaldehyde with an alkylated naphthalene sulphonic acid. Specifications 427,494 and 568,885 are referred to.
