In an internal-combustion engine, particularly a single-cylinder engine which embodies a crankcasing 14, Fig. 1, connected to the cylinder block 10, it is arranged that the cylinder or cylinders are horizontally disposed on a base 15 extending t e length of the cylinder or cylinders and integral therewith over the entire length so as to form a rigid unit adapted to be fixedly mounted upon a stand or chassis frame 17. An injection nozzle 22, Fig. 3, which may open into a precombustion chamber, not shown, a fuel filter 23, decompressor lever 25, Fig. 1, and fuel pump 24 are arranged on top of the engine whilst an air intake filter 20, Fig. 3, protrudes laterally from the cylinder head 13; the fuel pump 24 and a centrifugal governor may be arranged on the free end of the cam shaft, not shown. The crankcase 14, Fig. 1, is joined obliquely to the block 10, the joint passing through the crankshaft axis 11 to permit of its easy removal together with the crankshaft which has a flywheel 31, Fig. 3, on either side of the block. The part 14 has an oil filling connection. 27 located on top of the engine that may incorporate a filter and an air vent, not shown; the crankshaft may be removed without emptying the sump. On the crankshaft beyond one flywheel is a belt pulley 33 the other crankshaft end being arranged to accommodate a starting handle or for connection to a vehicle drive. The engine may also operate as a carburetter or petrol injection engine.
