Abstract

In the production of isobutyl alcohol by the catalytic reaction of carbon monoxide with hydrogen at elevated temperature and under pressure normal propyl alcohol, if desired, together with methyl alcohol or other oxygen-containing substances known for this purpose are introduced into the reaction vessel in addition to the carbon monoxide and hydrogen. In an example carbon monoxide and hydrogen and methyl alcohol and normal propyl alcohol are led through a vessel charged with an isobutyl oil catalyst prepared by mixing zinc oxide and chromium oxide (CrO3) with potassium hydroxide at elevated temperature and pressure to obtain isobutyl and higher alcohols.
