Abstract

682,761. Magnetrons. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE, DIRECTOR OF THE OFFICE OF TECHNICAL SERVICES OF. Feb. 27, 1948 [March 29, 1946], No. 5990/48. Class 39(i) A magnetron having a ring of interleaving anode fingers 33 arranged about the axis of a cylindrical cavity resonator 10, and connected alternately to opposite annular sections 34, 35, is tuned by axial relative movement of the annular sections and corresponding anode fingers. The annular section 34 is mounted on a flexible diaphragm 31 constituting one end wall of the cavity resonator 10. The tuner 37 for effecting movement of the annular section 34 constitutes the upper magnetic pole piece. The magnetron is assembled, according to the invention, as follows:-The yoke 36 for supporting the tuner mechanism 11, the tuner pole piece 37, and the annular section 34 are mounted on an upper jig, and the cavity resonator shell 30, the annular section 35 and the flexible diaphragm 31 on a lower jig; the components are then aligned on the lower jig, solder is placed at the junctions between all surfaces to 6e joined, and the assembly is heated in a hydrogen atmosphere. Where necessary, the solder may be spot welded to maintain it in position. The output coupling-loop assembly, and the cathodelower magnetic pole-piece assembly are then attached to the anode-cavity resonator assembly by a similar procedure. The tuner mechanism- 11 is then assembled. The magnetron may comprise cooling coils 12 located in grooves of the annular sections. The ring of anode fingers may comprise oppositely situated pairs of fingers connected to the same annular section, or oppositely situated relatively wide fingers.
