Abstract

682,567. Wrenches. EVANS, A. J. S. (Carlson, E. N., Carlson, P. H., and Carlson, W. E.). Jan. 29, 1951, No. 2248/51. Class 61 (iii). In an impact wrench or screwdriver, a handle member 10 provided with a massive head to receive hammer blows has a cylindrical socket 18 in which is supported a cylindrical member 12 which carries a work engaging bit 14. The driven member 12 has a V- shaped slot extending therethrough which provides a pair of diametrically opposite apertures each defining short helical arcs on the surface of the member 12 as shown at 24L, 24R, Fig. 4. A pin 28 is driven through diametrically opposite holes in the wall of the socket and passes through the slot in the member 12, the ends of the pin being flush with the outer wall of the handle. A spring 22 normally presses the handle upwardly. The handle is twisted in a direction to bring the pin into the required end of the slot to cause the bit to turn in the desired direction on striking the head.
