Abstract

An anti-knock mixture for motor fuel comprises a lead anti-knock compound and one or more chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons of the benzene series containing 6-8 carbon atoms and 2-3 chlorine atoms directly attached to the benzene ring, and having a vapour pressure at 50 DEG C of 0.2-6 mm. of mercury. Chlorohydrocarbons mentioned are 1, 2, 3-, 1, 2, 4- and 1, 3, 5-trichlorobenzenes, 2, 4-dichlorotoluene, 2, 3, 4-trichlorotoluene, mixed dichloro xylenes, 2, 3-dichloro-1, 4-dimethylbenzene and 3, 4, 6-trichloro-1, 2-dimethylbenzene. Bromohydrocarbons having more than one bromine atom, such as ethylene dibromide, may also be added. Lead anti-knock compounds specified are tetraethyl lead, tetrapropyl lead, dimethyldiethyl lead and methyltriethyl lead. Specification 679,623 and U.S.A. Specification 2,398,281 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use of a chlorohydrocarbon having a vapour pressure range as given above, and containing 2-3 chlorine atoms and 6-10 carbon atoms; 3, 4 a -trichlorotoluene, 1, 1, 3-trichloroindene, 1, 5-dichlorocyclo-octadiene-1, 5, 4, a , a -trichlorotoluene, 4-chloro-1-(b -chloroethyl) benzene, 1, 8-dichlorooctane, 3, 4-dichlorocumene, 1, 7-dichloroheptane, a , a , a -trichlorotoluene, a -, a -dichlorotoluene, 1, 5-dichlorohexane, mixed dichloroheptanes, 2, 5-dichlorohexadiene-1, 3, 2, 2-dichloro-1-methylcyclohexane, 1, 2-dichlorocyclohexane and 4, 4-dichloroheptane are referred to. Additional bromohydrocarbons mentioned are monobromoxylenes, bromoethylbenzene and bromotoluene. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
