Abstract

Fully halogenated fluorochloroethanes containing 1 to 5 fluorine atoms are converted into other fully halogenated ethane products, at least one component of which contains one more fluorine atom in the molecule than does the starting material, by heating at 250-500 DEG C. in the vapour phase in the presence of an unsupported chromium oxide catalyst and in the absence of added hydrogen fluoride. The mixture of products generally contains hexafluoroethane, various chlorofluoroethanes, hexachloroethane and tetrachloroethylene.
