Abstract

Chlorinated pyridines containing one or more chlorine atoms in the pyridine ring are prepared by interacting chlorine with pyridine or a substituted pyridine containing at least one hydrogen atom directly bonded to a carbon atom of the pyridine ring in the vapour phase at an elevated temperature in the presence of a porous material comprising silica, the proportion of chlorine in the reactants being not more than two moles of chlorine per mole of pyridine or substituted pyridine.
