Abstract
A fertilizing composition contains 50 per cent by weight calculated on the dry composition of an inorganic calcium compound which is insoluble in water but soluble in the acid medium produced in the soil and at least 10 per cent by weight, calculated on the inorganic calcium compound of organic material in which the carbon to nitrogen ratio is between 7:1 and 15:1 parts by weight and which is capable of being converted in the soil by micro-organisms. A portion of the calcium compound may be replaced by a corresponding magnesium compound and the organic substances employed may have already wholly or partly reacted with a calcium or magnesium compound before being mixed with the insoluble calcium compound. Examples refer to mixtures of (a) marl, dolomite, comminuted potatoes and cottonseed meal (b) marl, dolomite, potato fibres, blood meal, manganese and copper sulphates and borax, and (d) magnesia silica lime, straw and whale meal. The products may be dried and ground. Further examples of calcium compounds are tricalcium phosphate and calcium silicate.
