Abstract

681,935. Grinding-machines. THOMPSON (WOLVERHAMPTON), Ltd., J., and THOMAS, J. R. June 29, 1951 [July 12, 1950], No. 17402/50. Class 60. . A grinding machine, such as is used for dressing welded seams in pressure vessels and other containers 60, comprises a shaft 10, Fig. 1, suspended for universal movement and having a grinding wheel 13 at one end driven by a motor 19 associated with the other end, the motor also producing lateral oscillation of the shaft 10. The shaft 10 is supported in bearings 11 in a tubular housing 12 provided with a platform 21 to which is fixed a shaft 31 connecting the platform to a bracket 29 suspended from a boom 30. Lateral oscillations of the shaft 10 cause the shaft 31, Fig. 4, to rotate about its axis in bearings 35 in a trunnion that can rotate in bearings 34 in the bracket 29 so as to allow movement of the grinding wheel towards the workpiece which may be' fed linearly or be rotated either intermittently or continuously. An air or other pressure-fluid motor 49, Fig. 1, preferably double-acting, connected by a piston rod 53 to a trunnion on the top of the shaft 31, feeds the grinding wheel against the workpiece. As the piston rod 53 moves to pivot the shaft 31 in the bearings 34, the motor 49 is rocked on trunnions 50 supported from the bracket 29. The depth of feed can be gauged and adjusted by the position of one or more stops 61 secured to a beam 63 that is pivoted by arms 65 to the housing 12. Continuations 68 of the upper arms 65 are fixed to a trunnion 69 connected to a screw 70 that can be adjusted in a pivoted nut 74 by a handle 73. In an alternative depth gauge, Fig. 6, the beam 63 has been replaced by a two-part beam 75, 76 carried by the arms 65 and having a recess 78 to receive the housing 12. Work-engaging wheels 81 are carried by a member 79 that pivots at 80 on the part 76 and is adjustable by screws 82. The shaft 10 is driven by belts 17, Fig. 3, from the motor 19 which is supported on a plate 23 pivoted at 25 on lugs 22 carried by the platform 21. The motor may be rocked to tension the belts 17 against Ó jockey pulley 40x by adjusting screws 27 and nuts 28 engaging the lower edge of the plate 23 and secured to one of the brackets 20 connecting the platform 21 to the housing 20. The shaft 10 and motor assembly are oscillated laterally by rotating an eccentric pin 42 carried by a disc 36 in a slot in a stationary arm 44 fixed to, and off-set to one side of, the bracket 29. The arm 44 is fixed to the bracket 29 at points on the axis of the trunnion for the spindle 31 by a yoke 45, and the disc 36 is rotated from a worm and wheel (not shown) driven by a belt 40 from the motor. A guard 14 having a hinged inspection cover 15 is provided for the grinding wheel.
