Be it known that l, CHmstroFrni-z MUNTi-m, a citizen of the Republic of Germany, and a resident ot Dusseldorf-Oberkassel, Germany, have invented certainnew and useful lmprovements in Grinding Machines; (tiled in Germany January 29, 1921) and I do hereby declare the `following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention.
The present invention relates to a grind ing device for drills, cutting steels and other cutting tools, in which the work-piece remains stationary while the grinding-disc `is executing an oscillatory movement. The characteristic feature ot the invention is to be seen in that the grinding disc is bearing in two swinging or rocking members in such a manner, that one of the swinging membersis carrying the grinding v,spindle and its actuating device, while the other yswinging member imparts `to they grinding kspindle an rIn the drawings Vseveral modes of eXecuk tion of the invention "are illustrated, in which- F ig. l represents a vertical section "through the machine along line A-'-B in Fig. 2; y Fig. 2 is an approximately horiz'ontal sec- I'tion along line C-D of Fig. 3; 4 y

The trame lcarries on a driving shaft 2 a rocking member 3 which is rotatable and capable of being shifted in a longitudinal direction, and which again carries in bearings 4 the grinding spindle 5` and the seg ment grinding disc 6 and pulley 7,. The latter is driven directly by the lower pulley S while the pulley 9 is actuating the whole machine. The liXed pulley 8 is of such width so as to allow the belt T1 to travel along (Fig. l) if the rocking member 3 is shifted in longitudinal direction.'
A sleeve l() attached to the rocking member 3 surrounds the grinding spindle 5 and runs in an eccentrical boring ofthe sleeve ll, which is journaled in "a horizontal rocking member l2and driven by means of the worm-wheel 13, worm la, shaft l5, wormwheel 1'6 `and worm l? ig. rlhrough the turning motion of the sleeve ll the rocking member 3 together with `the grinding disc `is oscillated in a horizontal direction7 while the rocking 1ne'i`nber12 is swinging either in an upward or downward direction.

` almost straight oscillating movement of the grinding disc and thereby a gradual change ot stroke by means or eccentrics, and direct belt drive of the grinding-spindle, while tension rollers of any sort or similar devices are dispensed with.
Further, the provision of heavy liying masses is avoided, whose momentum torce would injuriously act upon the mechanism atv the end of each stroke, in that the upper rocking member does not take part in the stroke, but only executes at the front bearing a Vslight up and downward movement,
while the rear swinging axle remains stationary,l and in 'that the drive or' the lower rocking member 3 is directly arranged on the grinding spindie 5.
Figs. 6, 7 and 8 show the grinding machine adapted for carrying out the hollow grinding or making the groove in steel wor'x ing-tools. j
The tool, in the present case a working steel, is first fixed in the radius head 3l and the flat cutting faces are ground bythe front ace of the grinding body 32 in the manner described above. Then the piece is secured in the holder and the groove cut by means of the profile disc 34. ln the case or' largetools the groove may be obtained by means of' the` outsideproile or' the grinding body 32. For that purpose the profile disc'ismoved over the said holder 33 by manipulating the hand-wheel 22 (Fig. 3) and itwill swing around this centerA position during the grinding operation. As the oscillating movementis only slight and the rocking arm large in proportion, the height of are will be exceedingly small, so that the grinding may be described as practically straight. The adjustment` is effected by raising the holder 33 by means of a handwheel, bevel wheels 36l and spindle 38.
. The proiile disc 34 is either arranged inside the grinding body 32 (Fig. 7 or at the opposite end of the grinding spindle (Fig. 8) or in any, other suitable manner adjacent to the grinding body 32.
The holder 33 is arranged `correspondingly at the left or right side of the frame and it may be swung out, when out et use,
and locked inposition by means of a handle 37 in order toobtain more space available for the other grinding work.
Fig. 9 represents thedividing head tor the grinding machine, in' which 1 is the frame and 32 the grinding-disc. The radius head is provided at its ybase with yscale 46, which latter is adjustable below an indicating device 47 on the bed-plate 44. l. ln a grinding machine, a rocking kmember and agrinding spindle carried thereby, an eccentric loosely mounted on the spindle, driving means for the spindle and the eccentric, and meansto oscillate the member coniiprising an arm one end `of which surrounds the eccentric, and the other has a relatively fixed pivoting axis.

4. In a grindingmaohine, a driving shaft and a member mounted to swing thereon, a
grinding spindle carried by the member at a distance :from the shaft, an arm having one end around the spindle and pivoted aboutthe other end, an eccentrical connection between the member and the arm to swing the spindle relatively thereto,tmeans for ,varying the pivotal connection of the arm to change the throw of the spindle, and means to shift the arm lengthwise of its axis carrying the swinging membertherewith for advancing and withdrawing the spindle.
