Abstract

The invention comprises DL-threo-2-alkyl-4-carbalkoxy-5-phenyl-oxazolines. They are prepared by esterifying DL-threo-b -phenyl serine with an aliphatic alcohol and condensing the ester so obtained with an imino-ether. The product may be subjected to the further step of reduction, e.g. with lithium aluminium hydride, to the corresponding DL-threo-2-alkyl-4-hydroxymethyl-5-phenyl oxazoline. In an example, DL-threo-b -phenylserine is esterified with ethyl alcohol, the ester condensed with acetimino-ethyl-ether, and the resulting DL-threo-2-methyl-4-carbethoxy-5-phenyl-oxazoline is reduced with lithium aluminium hydride to give DL-threo-2-methyl-4-hydroxymethyl-5-phenyl-oxazoline.
