Abstract

Olefinic fluorides are made by treating alkyl fluorides containing at least one fluorine atom per molecule and at least one chlorine atom at each of two adjacent carbon atoms, with an alkali metal amalgam in an alcoholic medium. Methanol and ethanol are specified alcohols and water may advantageously be present, e.g. in amounts of about 5-60 per cent with an optimum at 30 per cent. Sodium or potassium amalgam may be used although preferably the amalgam is formed by the electrolysis of a solution of an alkali-metal chloride in an electrolytic cell with a mercury cathode and the alkyl fluoride reacted directly therewith. Alkali metal hydroxide formed during reaction may be neutralized with acid, e.g. hydrogen chloride. In examples: (1) trifluorotrichloro-ethane in 70 per cent methanol is reacted with sodium or potassium amalgam to yield chloro-trifluoroethylene; (2) 1,2,2-trichloro-2-fluoro-ethane in alcohol is reacted with sodium amalgam to yield 2-chloro-2-fluoro-ethylene; (3) tetrafluoro-dichloro-ethane in 70 per cent methanol is reacted with sodium amalgam to yield tetrafluoro-ethyl, and (4) is a repeat of (1) using sodium amalgam obtained by the electrolysis of aqueous sodium chloride.
