Class 20(ii) A safety support for a person using the upper steps of a step ladder comprises a horizontal guard rail g automatically adjustable in length and covered by a pair of rod or tubular supports c telescopically adjustable in tubes b secured to the ladder sides a, the supports c being locked in position by spring plungers e each adapted to project through a hole in the tube b and one of a series of spaced holes in the tube c. The rail g comprises end T-pieces h, Fig. 2, fitted with rods j projecting into the ends of tube k having springs k<SP>1</SP> interposed between the T-pieces h and the ends of the tube k. The tubes b may be incorporated in the ladder structure so as to assist in supporting the steps. A hook m serves for supporting a pail or paint container and curved extension rods n screwed into the T-pieces h provide handles above the rail g and a wooden flap p mounted thereon serves as a support for cleaning and other articles.
