Abstract
680,851. Friction type shock absorbers. ADAMS, G. W. July 18, 1951 [July 14, 1950], No. 17630/50. Class 108(iii). A friction-type shock-absorber comprises a cylindrical rotor L within a cylindrical chamber C and a plastic non-corrosive filling O of doughlike consistency whereby pressure is applied to friction faces H, H<1> on the chamber and rotor. The filling 0 may contain calcium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, calcium stearate, and glycerine. Pressure of the filling O may be adjusted by means of a grub-screw N acting on a plug V. Alternatively (Fig. 1 not shown), plug V may be dispensed with, the grub-screw N acting directly on the composition. A fibre or other friction disc R may be disposed between the faces H, H<1>. Friction may also be developed between the filling O and the peripheral surfaces of the rotor L and/or the body A. The latter surfaces may be smooth or may be formed with right- or left-handed helical grooves of part-circular cross-section. On assembly of the shock-absorber, the filling may be applied manually (with an end-plate D removed), or by means of a grease gun and nipple (not shown). Air pockets may be removed by relative rotation of the chamber C and rotor L by mounting the shock-absorber in a lathe. Suitable dimensions of the shockabsorber are given.
