Abstract

680,682. Wearing apparel; shaping and pressing collars etc.; turning inside out. AMERICAN SAFETY TABLE CO., Inc. Aug. 25, 1950 [June 9, 1950], No. 21125/50. Classes 112 and 141. Apparatus for shaping and pressing collars, lapels, cuffs, patch pockets or other articles of wearing apparel composed of several plies of fabric, comprises an electrically heated base plate having an open fronted recess therein into which the collar &c. carried by a die blade may be moved laterally, the blade then being withdrawn to enable a pressing shoe, mating with the edge of the recess, to press the collar &c. flatwise into the recess. Means are provided to prevent dislodgement of the article on withdrawal of the die blade, and to enable the plies of the article to be reverted on the die blade so that pressing of the inverted and reverted collar &c. may be effected in successive operations. The apparatus, as described with reference to the shaping and pressing of a collar comprises a sloping table 10, Figs. 1, 2, provided with a base plate 17 having electrically heated zones 12, 13, 14, Fig. 7 located respectively beneath a pair of recesses 23 formed by bars 20, 21 and a triangular plate 18 which defines with the bars &c. the collar points. Die blades 45, corresponding in form to the recesses, are secured to a wheeled carriage 50, Fig. 1, the upper part of which is longitudinally adjustable relatively to the lower part, the carriage being actuated along a slot 52a against spring tension by a cable and pedal 57 to advance the collar points mounted on the die blades into the recesses 23. Pressing shoes 24 overlying the recesses 23 are actuated by arms 34, 41 the arms 34 being fixed to the shoes 24 but freely mounted on a rod 32 carried by arms 30 of a yoke 28 and the arms 41 being rigidly secured but with provision for angular adjustment to vary the point of pressure, to arms 40 pivoted on the rock shaft 25 of the yoke 28 the arms 40 having adjustable screws 44 for actuation by the yoke. The yoke has a curved rear arm 29, Fig. 2, coupled by a link 36 to a pedal 39, a spring normally retaining the yoke and hence the shoes 24 in the raised position. The recesses 23 may have light serrated or knurled surfaces 78, Fig. 7, to maintain the positioned collar against dislocation during withdrawal of the die blades prior to shaping pressure being applied by the shoes 24. To facilitate the reverting of the collar on the die blades between successive shaping operations of the shoes 24 the collar point is placed over one of the fixed points 66, Fig. 7, and an axially aligned point 67 mounted on a carriage 68, actuated through a cable by a third pedal 73, is moved into point contact with the point 66, the collar then being reverted on to the movable point 67 and die blade. The movable point is then withdrawn, the die blade returned to rest position, the collar point finally adjusted thereon, after which the die blade is advanced to carry the reverted collar into the shaping recess. Normally the right hand recess and shoe are used first to shape the left hand collar point, after which the right hand collar point is shaped in the left hand recess. Each recess is longer than half the collar so that in the shaping of the two points of the collar, the whole collar is pressed. According to a modification the die blades may be actuated by a hand pusher bar. In a further modification the recesses are of a form to shape only the wing portions of the collar. The collar may be prevented from dislocation during withdrawal of the die blade after the positioning in the recess, by spring pressed detents in the form of pointed pins passing through the pressure shoes under light spring pressure, into contact with the .collar.
