This invention relates in general to fastener attaching machines such as are commonly used. .in securing buttons or fastener elements to garments or the like, and particularly to a kick-out and hold-down device adapted to be attached and operated with such machine to perform a prior operation on the garment before the fastener elements are attached thereto.
In the manufacture of certain classes of garments, and as a specific example we refer to the manufacture of overalls that customarily are provided with a large patch pocket attached -to the face of the bib, the upper end of the pocket ponent elements of a snap fastener device, and
then it is necessary to attach the complementary fastener element to the bib and in its proper alignment. In order to do this it is first necessary to remove the upper portion of a patch pocket from the setting station of the. fastener element on the bib.
Machines for accomplishing the above operation are known as'kick-out devices and one form is disclosed in the Huelster Patent No. 2,164,743. While'these former kick-out devices of the type disclosed in the Huelster patent were satisfactory for the purpose of moving a portion of the garment out of the path of the setting tool, they also had the fault of moving the garment out of alignment with its previously set This was due to the the operator was not strong enough to hold the garment against the kicking action of the kickout device and, therefore, a slight movement of the garment would cause the fastener part set on the garment to be misaligned or out of registry to its component element set on the pocket part. It is one of the objects of this invention to provide a device thatmay be easily attached to a fastener attaching machine and will operate in conjunction with the fastener setting mechanism, first mechanically to holdf'down the garment upon a support member and then kick out the'" overlying pocket portion out of line with the setting station of the machine.

It is to be understood that the machine to which this invention is applied may be either a button or snap fastener attaching machine, of well known construction. Such a machine consists essentially of a base or bed plate I!) having a curved standard II extending upwardly therefrom and supporting a bearing head If on its front end. A plunger I3 is slidably mounted in the head l2 and is operated at its upper endby a main oscillating lever is secured to and supported on a cross shaft 15 pivoting in spaced lug [5 extending upwardly from the standard H. The plunger I3 carries a setting die H having an element carrier block l8 mounted upon its lower end for receiving a fastener element such as an eyelet stud (9 (see Fig. 4). The stud I9 is held in line with the die by, spring op- .erated jaws 2i! pivoted in said carrier block and the stud may be fed from a hopper into the carrier block l8 through the usual form of feed chute not shown.

In order to support the garment and properly register it preliminary to the fastener setting operation a platform table 30 'is provided that is held in elevated position substantially on a plane common withthe upper surface of the anvil car- 'rier block 22' and the feedtrack 25- as by means of support brackets 3 I attached to the bed plate l0. As noted in Fig. 2- thetable has a central cut-out 32 so as to circumvent the anvil= carrier block 22 and yet is close enough to said block to provide ample support for the garment in the area of the setting station. A pair of gauge fingers 33 are sl-id'ablymounted on horizontal rods 33aextending laterally from the-bearing head l-Z of the machine. The lower ends of the fingers 33 are formed with embossed portions 33b against which the upper end of the patch pocket 21- may be engaged for properly registering the garment relative to the setting station of the machine.
In order to hold the garment in the machine a clamping orpressermember 34 is provided and located substantially on the center line of the machine and behind the fastener set-ting station so as to prevent dislocation of the garment when the pocket kick-out members 35 and 36 are moved forwardly. The presser member- 34 is located between the pair of kick-out plates or members 35' and 36 of identical construction to' be more fully described later. The clampingmember 34 is made secure to a cross shaft 31' pivoted in the lower end of a pair of dependent bearing brackets 38 and 39 attached to opposite sides of the standard It. Oscillatingmotion is imparted tothe clamping member 34 through shaft 3! operated by a'lever 40 fixedly secured to the right end of the shaft 31, see Figs. 2 and 4. The free end of the lever 40 is connected to a cushion link 42 which specifically consists of two sections, an
upper section 43 and a lower-section 44. The upper section 43 is formed witha tubular end to telescopically'receive the lower section 44 the form of a rod. The lower'end of section 44 is formed with a yoke 45 connected'to the end of the lever 40 as by cross pin 41. The rod portion of the section 44 is formed with a reduced extension 48 that extends into a counterbore 49 of the upper section 43. A coil spring 5!! surrounds the reduced extension 48 to impart the cushion effect to the link 42. Operation In the operation of attaching the fastener elements to the bib of an overall garment in line with a complemental element previously set to a patch pocket already attached to the bib, the garment when first brought to the machine will zbe properly oriented by the operator. For this .operation the bib will be laid on the support .table 30 with a considerable portion of said bib also resting upon the feed track 25. The upper edge of the patch pocket 21 will be brought into contact with the embossed ends 331) of the gauge fingers 33 and the edge seams of the patch pocket will be lined up with said gauge fingers which will thereby dispose the fastener element 28 on the patch pocket directly in line with the set ting station of the machine as indicated by the center line X.
When the garment is thus properly located with respect to the setting station of the machine the mechanism for operating the main lever 14 may be actuated to drive the plunger l3 and setting die I! downwardly. During the counter-clockwise movement of the main lever 14 as viewed in Fig. 1 both cams 54 and 65 will be carried therewith. This motion of the left cam 54 will first serve to swing the clamping or presser member 35 downwardly in a counter-clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 1, and clamp the bib 26 against the upper surface of the feed track 25.
The counter-clockwise motion of the clamping member 3 1 will, through the medium of spring 59, also impart a pivoting action to the kick-out plates 35 and 36 about the pivot 31 and initially lower them to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1. It will be noted that the front end of each of said plates 3'5 and 36 are formed with notches 35b and 361). This initially lowered position will bring the notches 35b and 36b of the kick-out plates in line with the upper edge of the patch pocket 21 and better serve to pick up the edge of the patch pocket. Continued movement of the main lever M and its attached cam 65 will actuate the bell crank lever fill on the left side of the machine and impart a positive advancing motion to both kick-out plates 35 and 36 which latter motion will cause the upper end of the patch pocket 21 to be moved toward the front edge of table 38, as shown in Fig. 3, out of line with the setting station of the machine. The forward substantially straight line motion of the kick-out plates 35 and 36 will be controlled by reason of the shape of the cam slots 35a and 36b in said plates which slots have sliding engagement on the support cross pin 31.
After the presser member 34 and kick-out plates 35 and 36 have performed their respective functions, continued motion of the lever it will cause the plunger is with its setting die El to complete its stroke and secure the fastener element (stud i9 and post 24) upon the bib part of the garment in its proper position to line up with the fastener element 28 on the patch pocket when the latter i returned to its normal position.
While the form of the invention herewith shown and described embraces a preferred embodiment of the same it is to be understood that the construction may be varied as to mechanical details without departing from the spirit 'of the invention and thevscope'of what is claimed.
I claim:
1. In combination with a fastener attaching machine having a punch and anvil coacting at a setting station for securing elements of a fastener member together upon a garment in line with a previously applied complemental fastener element on an overlying portion of said garment at the setting station, an oscillating lever for operating said punch, a support table, presser means operated from said oscillating lever. for clamping a portion of the garment against said table behind the setting station to hold it in the machine, a kick-out means, and means connected to said lever to operate said kick-out means to remove the overlying portion of the garment out of the area of the setting station, said kick-out means being operative after said clamping means has clamped the garment against said table.
2. In combination with a fastener attaching machine having a punch and anvil coacting at a setting station for securing elements of a fastener member together upon a garment in line with a previously applied complemental fastener element on an overlying portion of said garment at the setting station, an oscillating lever for operating said punch, stationary means attached to the machine for locating the garment in proper relation to the setting station, a support table, presser means operated from said oscillating lever for clamping a portion of the garment against said table behind the setting station to hold it in the machine, a kick-out means, and means connected to said lever to operate said kick-out means to remove the overlying portion of the garment out of the area of the setting station, said kick-out means being operative after said clamping means has clamped the garment against the table.
3. In combination with a fastener attaching machine having a punch and anvil coacting at a setting station for securing elements of a fastener member together upon a garment in line with a previously set fastener on an overlying portion of said garment at the setting station, an oscillating lever for operating said punch, stationary means attached to the machine for 10- cating the garment in proper relation to the setting station, a support table, presser means operated from said oscillating lever for pressing a portion of said garment against said table behind the setting station, and kick-out means straddling said presser means also operated from said lever and serving to remove the overlying portion of the garment out of the area of the setting station, and means causing said presser means to act in advance of the kick-out means so as to maintain said garment stationary against the kick-out impulse imparted to said overlying portion.
4.
