Abstract
302,944. British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd., Bates, A., and Keall, F. B. July 20, 1927. Cupping.-A shoe &c. sole is prepared for the reception of a Louis heel in a machine which splits the heel end of the sole, by a stationary knife 71 during the advance of the work by a table 11, and thus forms a heel-breast flap, which is subsequently moulded between the tools 191, 195, and a heel-seat tongue which is forced by a bulger 201 through an aperture in the table and is bevelled by the advance of a knife 151, the knife 71 being retracted prior to the moulding and bevelling operations. The machine is controlled by a one-revolution clutch and actuates the various machanisms by cams on a shaft 2. The work is fed under a profiled presser bar 91 which may be controlled to vary the longitudinal and transverse thickness of the breast flaps. The work table 11 is serrated and is carried by a slide 5 which is reciprocated by linkage 15, 17 and carries lateral spring pressed plungers 51, Fig. 4, controlled by side cams 57 to actuate spring jaws 63 to clamp the sole to the table. A shutter 25 is actuated to close the heel aperture in the table at the end of each return stroke of the table by a fixed stop 33 striking a yielding abutment on a pivoted arm on which the shutter is mounted, spring-pressed bevelled latches 37, Fig. 2, being provided in the slide 5 to engage under a stop rib 35, Fig. 1, on a shutter to retain it in the closed position during the advance of the table. The shutter may be provided with interchangeable central inserts of different thicknesses to vary the transverse thickness of the breast flaps. Cams 43, Fig. 2, release the shutter at the end of the forward stroke of the table to allow the heel-seat bulging and trimming operations to be effected. The presser bar 91 is mounted eccentrically in slides 93, Fig. 3, guided in a head 76 and adjustable relatively thereto by a screwtraversed wedge-ended bar 97 which abuts against a spring-pressed stop 113 mounted in the machine frame. The head 76 is integral with a bracket 75 which is pivoted to the machine frame at 111 and carries the guide in which the cutter 71 is moved to and from its operative position. A cam slot 135, Fig. 5, in a member adjustably mounted on the work slide controls an arm 131 on the presser bar to vary its angular position and thus to vary the elevation of the knife 71 during the splitting operation to produce the required longitudinal section of breast flaps. The presser bar or table may also be shaped so that the resulting split is profiled transversely. The breast-flap as it is formed rides on to a moulding member 195 pivoted to a similarly contoured moulding member 191 which, on the withdrawal of the knife 71, is depressed by a toothed segment actuated through a yielding link 181 first to mould the breast flap and then to force the heel-seat tongue through the table aperture whereupon the knife 151 is advanced to cut and bevel the heel-seat and, if required, cut off the marginal trimming of the heel-seat. The presser-bar is lifted by the actuation of the bracket 75 through the link 121 during, the return of the table to prevent deformation of the moulded breast flaps. Specifications 7721/04. [Class 17, Boots &c.], 145,847*, [Class 17 (i), Boots and shoes, Apparatus for making &c.], 245,276, 281,787 and 293,366, [all in Class 31 (i), Cutting and severing machines &c.], and 299,078, [Class 17 (i), Boots and shoes, Apparatus for making &c.], are referred to.
