Abstract

680,089. Reels. ETHICON SUTURE LABORATORIES, Inc. March 16, 1951 [March 16, 1950], No. 6442/51. Class 120(iii) [Also in Groups VI and XVII] In a package of surgical sutures (see Group XVII), suture strands 11 are wound on a reel 3 which is formed with a recess 17 at one end and two concave recesses 13 and 15 at the other and is integral with a clamping member 19 which may be folded over against the surface of the reel along the dotted line. The strands are positioned in the recess 13 and are so wound that equal lengths are suspended on each side of the reel, the end portions of the strands being folded over the bottom of the reel against opposite sides thereof. When it is desired to remove a number of sutures, the package is opened and the sutures loosened by sliding them out of the recess 13 into the recess 15 which is of greater depth. The desired number of strands may then be grasped and pulled out of the package as illustrated by Fig. 1 (not shown). The recesses 13 and 15 may be replaced by a single concave recess:
