Abstract

677,955. Pile fabrics. MOHAWK CARPET MILLS, Inc. Oct. 19, 1950 [Nov. 25, 1949], No. 25497/50. Classes 142(ii) and 142(iv) In a pile fabric comprising a backing made up of stuffer warp yarns 21. weft yarns 22, 23 lying above and below the yarns 21. and binder warp yarns 24, 25. and in which pile warp yarns 26 are held in place in the backing by portions of these yarns lying beneath weft yarns 22 in the upper level, while other portions of the pile warp yarns rise between each two adjacent weft yarns 22 in the upper level to form the pile surface, there is a single set only of pile warp yarns 26, and each pile warp yarn 26 rises between each two adjacent weft yarns 22 in the upper level so that each unit of 'the pile surface defined by a pair of adjacent weft yarns in the upper level and by adjacent spaced binder warp yarns 24, 25 contains a single pile element. Further, the pile in selected transverse rows is either of different heights or comprises both pile loops 27 or pile tufts 28. In forming the fabric, tufts or high loops are made in any row by raising the desired pile warp yarns 26a over a pile wire 48 in the usual way, and the pile warps are maintained under slack tension. The shedding operation is modified so that when a weft yarn 22, inserted into the shed immediately following that into which a pile wire 48 was inserted, is beaten up, the weft yarn engages all the pile warp yarns and pushes them ahead of it to form relatively low loops. When the weft yarn is fully beaten up, the reed 47 engages the previously inserted wire 48 and causes. it to stand erect to form loops of the height of the wire. U.S.A. Specification 2,164,090 is referred to.
