Abstract
677,778. Spring drums. SMART & BROWN (ENGINEERS), Ltd. July 18, 1950. [May 16, 1949] No. 12992/49. Class 78 (ii). A spring-loaded drum (Fig. 3) is formed of two disc parts 10, 11 each having a groove 18 of gradually increasing depth formed in one face thereof and the two together co-operating to form an oblique passage for the cable. The disc parts have trunnions 16 and are separated by an annulus 12. Fig. 1. Cable 14 is led into casing 7, 8 around drum 10, 11 rotating therein and out again, the latter drum being formed with hollows 22 covered by discs 23 secured by screws 24 and the hollows containing respectively biassing spring 25 and pawl device 15. Fig. 5. Gravity pawls 27, 28 are pivoted to plate 26 secured to the left trunnion 16 of drum 10, 11. When rope 14 is pulled out (e.g. to lengthen the supporting cable of a lamp) drum 10. 11 rotates clockwise against the spring, pawls 27, 28 swinging freely. When said cable is released from tension it rotates anticlockwise quickly, the weighted tails of the pawls swinging under centrifugal force to cause the noses to avoid the notches 31, 32 of the casing. When the speed drops, the noses engage the notches 31, 32 to hold the lamp.
