Abstract
24,248. Dobbie, J. C. Nov. 11. Sounding-apparatus.-Relates to brake mechanism for winches used in sounding-apparatus. The winding-drum d is loosely mounted upon a drum c fast on the shaft b. To the drum c is attached one end of a brake strap j, the other end k being secured to a loose disk e provided with a number of pins f. The strap j sits in a recess t integral with the drum d. The drums c, d are normally clutched together by the action of springs l, m and by a spring-controlled lever g engaging the pins f. To free the drum d, the lever g is raised to rotate the disk e and contract the strap j. The strap may be arranged to embrace a brake pulley integral with the drum d. On the other end of the shaft b is loosely mounted a ring n having radial arms o carrying blocks p normally retracted by springs q. When the drum d is running freely, pins r upon it carry round the blocks o. Should the speed become excessive, the blocks fly out and engage a fixed ring s integral with the frame. Pivoted blocks may also be employed.
