Abstract
677,659. Hoppers. GAMBLE. H. Feb. 6, 1951. [Vlarch 15, 1950 ; April 21. 1950 ; Oct. 10, 1950] Nos. 6542/50, 9829/50 and 25530/50. Class 78 (i). [Also in Groups VIII and XVII] Drinking straws stacked in a hopper 15 are fed therefrom one at a time by continuously rotated fluted drum means ]4. One side 37 of the hopper is oscillated about its pivot 38 by link means 39 actuated by a crank pin 40 on a continuously rotating disc. Rotary brush means 16 co-operates with the drum means 14 to brush any surplus straws back into the hopper and ensure that only one straw occupies each flute. The straws drop from the flutes of the drum means 14 to a second, intermittently rotated, fluted drum ]3, this transfer being aided by pins 43 on a rocking shaft 44. The drum means 14 comprises, Fig. 7, a central narrow fluted drum 14B secured on a shaft 81 and two outer narrow fluted drums 14A, 14C loosely mounted on the shaft and adjustable thereabout relative to the centre drum 14B to vary the effective size of the flutes according to the width of the straw to be carried, being secured to the central drum 14B by bolts 106 passing through quadrant slots 107. Alternatively, the outer drums may be fixed and the centre one adjustable.
