Abstract

677,579. Heating liquids in bulk. A.P.V. CO., Ltd. March 8, 1951. [April-4, 1950], No. 8425/50. Class 64(iii) A heater for mounting within a liquid containing vessel 10, e.g. a brewing copper, comprises axially spaced frusto-conical members 21 having their. larger diameter ends lowermost, at least one .of said members being jacketed to receive a heating medium, e.g. steam for the liquid. Preferably the members 21 are arranged coaxially to provide therebetween one or more frusto-conical flow paths 22 for the liquid, leading upwardly to a central vertical channel through the heater. In Fig. 2, the members 21 are all jacketed and are supported from the bottom of the vessel 10, on tubular supports 30, 31 arranged in two series viz. inwardly and outwardly of the members 21 and carrying brackets 32, 34 to which are attached short hollow struts 33, 35 these latter being secured respectively to the inner and outer walls of the members 21. Ports, aligned with the struts 33, 35 are provided in the walls of the members 21, in the brackets 32, 34 and in the tubular supports 30, 31. Steam is passed upwardly through one or more of the tubular supports 30 and flows through the hollow struts 33 to the space within the jacketed frusto-conical members 21, the condensate from the steam flowing through the hollow struts 35 to one or more of the tubular supports 31. Fig. 5, shows a modification in which only one series of tubular supports is required these being located generally outwardly of the members 21 passing through their larger diameter ends and being welded thereto. Some of the tubular supports are provided with ports 50 for the admission of steam to the interior of the members 21, the other tubular supports being provided with ports 51 for the discharge of condensate. The tubular supports may comprise detachable sections (e.g. 30a, Fig. 5), so that the capacity of the heater may be varied by removing or inserting one or more frusto-conical members 21. In the application to a brewing copper described Fig. 1 (not shown), and Fig. 2, the uppermost frusto-conical member comprises a hood 26 carrying a duct 27 and surmounted by a cowl 28. Boiling liquid passes upwardly through the frusto-conical passages 22 and through the duct 27 and is showered by the cowl on to the surface of the wort within the copper. The copper may contain a plurality of heaters.
