Abstract

474,826. Heating and cooling liquids. HERSEY, J. C. Jan. 20, 1937, No. 4287/36. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XIII] Heat-exchange apparatus of the type having nested chambers which intercommunicate alternately at opposite ends of the chambers, with heating means along the path of flow of the fluid, has the heating means removably housed in one or more casings, each casing totally enclosing the heating means except for one end or mouth of the casing, and the said mouths being removably held between a plurality of parts, which latter are removably assembled to form a continuous end wall to the outer casing of the apparatus. The heating elements may thus be readily withdrawn individually or as a whole with the end wall of the outer casing. A lower disc 1, carrying an inlet nozzle 5, is connected to a two-part upper disc 2 by a cylinder 3 which has an outlet 28. Nested cylinders 9, 10, 11, 12 are attached to the lower disc 1 and reach nearly to the upper disc. Nested cylinders 13, 14 attached to the upper disc 2 are between the cylinders 9 and 10, and 11 and 12 respectively. The upper disc is in two parts 2A and 2B. A central sleeve 18, closed at the bottom and for housing an electrical rod type heating element, is held by its flange 19 and nut 16 in the part 2B. A cylindrical annular shell 21, between the cylinders 10 and 11, has a flange 22 which is held to the part 2B by a ring nut 25 and to the part 2A by a second ring nut 24. Into this chamber 21 are inserted two semi-cylindrical heating elements. The feed water passes from substantially tangential holes 6 in nozzle 5, with a swirling motion into the space between sleeve 18 and cylinder 9. Thereafter the water flows over and under the top and bottom free edges of cylinders 9, 13, 10, 21, 11, 14, 12, until it issues at 28 being heated as it passes sleeve 18 and shell 21. The internal and external surfaces of sleeve 18 and shell 21 are preferably mat and black-anodized if these parts are of aluminium or its alloys. The other surfaces of the partitions are preferably mat and black-anodized. If the heating elements are replaced by cooling of fluids. The device may also be used for the vaporizing or preheating of liquid fuels.
