Abstract
677,352. Thermo-electric batteries. SPEED DEVELOPMENT CO., Ltd., and RUFFLE, W. H. Nov. 22, 1950 [Nov. 22, 1949], No. 29900/49. Class 53. A thermocouple for use in apparatus for detecting high temperatures in aircraft &c. comprises two wires 1, 2 of the same metal connected by a different metal wire 3. The lower ends of the wires 1, 2 are soldered to terminal blocks 4, 5 provided with transverse openings 9 to receive the lead - in wires and threaded holes 7 to receive contact screws 8. The blocks 4, 5 and the lower ends of the wires 1, 2 are embedded in moulded fireproof insulation 6. The screws 8 are provided with pointed ends which pierce the insulation 12 of the lead-in wires and make contact with the conductors. The device is enclosed in a housing 16 which supports a metal shroud 14 which with an insulating bead 17 protects the cold junction 2a from any source of high temperature affecting the junction 3a. Slots 22 in the casing allow access of air but serve to muffle flame. Specification 638,431 is referred to.
