Abstract
738,776. Thermometers. MALONE INSTRUMENT CO., Ltd., and MALONE, R. Jan. 6, 1954 [Jan. 7, 1953], No. 461/53. Class 97 (3). Apparatus for the measurement of temperatures within a thermally insulated enclosure by means of a distance thermometer bulb or bulbs supported therein includes means producing a directed circulation of air over the bulb or bulbs. As shown in Fig. 1, a chamber such as the refrigerated hold of a ship has insulating walls 2, a floor 1, and a roof 3 supported by columns 4. A thermometer bulb 9 (not shown), connected to remote indicating means in known manner, is mounted on a column 4 and enclosed in a housing 10 connected by a pipe 11 to a fan circulating cold air through the hold, so that air is drawn into housing 10 through its open lower end. In a system wherein the direction of air flow may be reversible, pipe 11 is connected to the main duct 6, Fig. 5, by two extensions 13 entering the duct on opposite sides of the fan 5. Each extension is fitted with a flap 15 so that, whatever the direction of the air flow, air is drawn from pipe 11. The bulb 9 may be placed in a recess in column 4, the recess being covered by a plate with apertures at the bottom and connected to pipe 11. In a modification, the bulb housing is mounted on the roof 3 and connected at one end to pipe 11 and at the other end to an intake pipe extending down along a column to within a short distance of the floor. Alternatively, the intake pipe may have a swivel and/or a telescopic joint so that the end thereof may be adjusted in position within the hold. In a further modification, where the hold is grid-cooled, the grid is surrounded by a vertical pipe through which the cold air passes downward. The bulb housing is connected to the upper part of the duct surrounding the vertical grid pipe.
