1,006,445. Ventilation; cooling buildings. G.V. VENTILATION. Oct. 2, 1961, No. 35566/61. Headings F4S and F4V. A room, e.g. in a cinema, is cooled by passing fresh air by a fan 6 (Fig. 1) along a duct 3 formed between an insulating upper ceiling 1 and a lower metal ceiling 2 which acts as a radiation absorption surface for absorbing heat radiated from persons in the room, the air then passing over heating elements 7 and entering the room through openings 4. A spherical radiation measuring device 10 controls the fan 6, heating elements 7, or refrigerating elements (not shown) in the duct in accordance with the temperature in the room. The ceiling 2 may be ribbed on its upper surface to facilitate heat exchange. A number of measuring devices 10 may be provided and may each comprise plates with bright and dull surfaces with means for measuring the difference in temperature (owing to differential heat absorption) between such surfaces. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3, the duct 3 is closed to the room and air is supplied from one end through an opening 5a, either by natural draught or by a fan (not shown). Ventilation of the room is effected independently by a fan 6a, passage 9 and openings 4a which may contain heating elements. The device 10 may control the fan 6a, the fan for the duct 3 or refrigerating elements in the duct. In a modification, a liquid or gaseous medium other than air may be circulated in the duct 3. The duct may be formed along a side wall instead of the ceiling.
