[Also in Group XXIV] In loading system for mine tubs and the like, a drive is transmitted alternatively to two units by friction gearing. As applied to a coal mine a motor S is mounted on a frame 1 weighted at 2 and pivoted at 3 to a stationary frame 5. A friction roller S<SP>2</SP> on the motor shaft is located in, and may be brought into contact with the inner face of a hollow pulley G<SP>1</SP> on the gear box driving the scraper chain loading the coal. A motor P for moving the trucks into the loading position is similarly mounted and has a roller P<SP>2</SP> engageable with a hollow pulley GG<SP>4</SP>. The two pivoted motor frames 1 are interlinked and arranged to be tilted by a pedal 11 to bring either the roller S<SP>2</SP> or the roller <SP>p2</SP> into driving engagement with its respective pulley, so that the trucks are stationary while being loaded and, similarly, loading is stopped while the trucks are moved. The tilting of the motors may be effected automatically by the respective weights of a full and an empty truck. In a modification employing a single motor to drive alternatively two units, the motor carries at each end a friction roller within a driven pulley, the two pulleys being offset, and is pivotally mounted to bring either one or the other into driving engagement ; alternatively, the motor is stationary and each friction roller is carried by a swinging arm. In a further modification a single tiltable motor carries a friction roller engageable externally with either of two sideby-side driven pulleys. Where the motor is a steam or compressed air engine a control valve governing the engine speed may be incorporated.
