Abstract

703,082. Endless conveyers. DAVIS & SON DERBY, Ltd., J., and DAVIS, W. H. April 15, 1952 [Jan. 13, 1951], No. 994/51. Class 78 (1) Control mechanism for endless conveyers comprises a pair of centrifugal governor mechanisms, one responsive to the speed of the conveyer belt and the other responsive to the speed of rotation of one of the rollers over which the belt or the like travels, means capable of disconnecting the conveyer drive associated with these governor mechanisms in such a way that so long as there is no material difference in the speeds of the belt and the drum, the drive remains operative but as soon as a difference develops these mechanisms act to disconnect the drive. As shown, a conveyer belt 10 supported on idlers 11 is driven by two drums 12 rotated by a motor 13 controlled by a switch gear 14. One of these drums is connected through gearing 32, 33 to a flexible cable drive 23 leading to a control box 24, whilst a roller 20 held against the belt by an arm 21 on a bracket 22 operates a second flexible drive 23 leading to the control box. Coupled to these drives 23, 30 are centrifugal governor mechanisms 25, 31 which control switches A, B, respectively.. When the belt and roller are running at the same speed the switches A, B remain closed and a pilot circuit to the switch gear 14 is completed. As soon as one of the governors ceases to rotate at its normal speed, it operates its associated switch A or B to break the pilot circuit and so shut down the motor 13. The conveyer may be driven by a compressed air motor controlled by a solenoid-operated valve, the governor mechanism actuating switch mechanism controlling the energising or deenergising of the solenoid circuit. The governor mechanisms and their associated switches may be as described in Specification 600,524.
