An apertured ceramic building element is substantially in the form of a sinusoidal curve with the troughs closed by bridge pieces 31 and with dovetail ribs 3 on the crests on one or both faces of the unit. Dovetail grooves formed by dovetail ribs 3 are also provided on the side edges. Composite units are formed by one, two, or three layers of the elements cemented together with, if desired, reinforcing rods in the joints. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also metal tie members in the form of a straight or L- shaped strip 22 provided with upwardly and downwardly extending pins 23 to engage with the building elements and with columns on which they are supported. A modified form of building element is shown in which diamond-shaped and circular holes are arranged alternately. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
