Abstract

A building block having recesses 10 and protrusions 11 e.g. on one side of the block, so that when the recesses and protrusions of at least two blocks are located relating to one another the blocks are interconnected. When a filled cavity (15 Figure 9) method of construction is employed, a bedding joint may be dispensed with, confining the bonding of the joined blocks to the centre section of the wall, between the inner and outer leafs of the wall. The blocks may be constructed in a half block stagger in a vertical attitude and a half block stagger in a horizontal attitude with respect to the inner and outer leafs of the wall, providing maximum bonding of each block to the opposing leaf of the wall, resulting in a monolithic type structure. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Interconnecting building block This invention relates to building materials.
Building blocks are used in the building industry for the construction of walls and building. Standard blockwork is a reasonably quick method of building but does, however, have certain restrictions particularly with regard to the number of block courses that may be erected at any one time in order that no excessive weight is imposed on the normal bedding joint until it is sufficiently set.
The present invention provides a means of joining together two or more blocks either without any bedding joint, or with a reduced bedding joint, to form a wall, or either part of or a complete building.
Using one block as an outer block and one block as an inner block, with the protrusions located in the recesses of the opposing block to form a cavity between the inner and outer blocks which may be filled with a suitable compound to join the blocks together, each inner and outer block is bonded to the course immediately above or below it, and may be a half-vertical block staggered for additional strength and appearance. The accompanying drawings illustrate the specific embodiment of the invention as follows: Figure 1 shows in perspective the block with recesses 10 and protrusions 11; Figure 2 shows in plan the block with recesses 10 and protrusions 11; Figure 3 shows the face of the block incorporating a rectangular recess, 12, which may be used for fixings, subdivisions, 13, to give the appearance of smaller blocks and a pointing groove, 14, so that if the block is used without a bedding joint, the groove may be filled to give the appearance of a traditional joint, also to seal the joined blocks against the weather; Figure 4 shows a half-horizontal block; Figure5showsa half-vertical block; Figure 6 shows a quarter-vertical block; Figure 7shows an internal corner bonding and abutment bonding block; Figure 8 shows an external bonding block;; Figure 9 illustrates the forming of a wall, starting with a half-horizontal block, 4, and a full block to form the base of the wall showing the cavity, 15, to be filled; Figure 10 illustrates the method of construction afterthe base has been formed, an additional course of blocks is added, being bonded to the course below when the cavity is filled with a suitable filler.
Also illustrated are the pointing grooves, 14, joined together; Figure 11 shows a plan view of how Figures 1, 5,6, 7 and 8 may be used joined together to form a wall, incorporating corners, abutments, wall ends and openings.
1. An interconnecting building block having one or more apertures and interconnecting protrusions, so that when positioned with the protrusions located relative to the apertures the blocks are connected together.
2. An interconnecting building block as claimed in claim 1, with a cavity between the apertures and protrusions which may be filled with a suitable filler compound to joint the blocks together.
3. An interconnecting building block as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, where part blocks may be made from the original block design.
4. An interconnecting building block as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, where part blocks may be cut from the original block design.
5. An interconnecting building block as claimed in claim 1 and or claim 2, wherein a recess to facilitate fixings is provided.
6. An interconnecting building block as claimed in any preceeding claims, wherein pointing grooves are provided on the facing edges of the block.
7. An interconnecting building block as claimed in any preceeding claims, wherein the face of the block has subdivisions.
8. An interconnecting building block substantially as described herein, with reference to Figures 1-11 of the accompanying drawings.
