677,038. Stuffing-box substitutes. WHITE DENTAL MANUFACTURING CO., S.S. Sept. 28, 1950 [July 28, 1950], No. 18886/50. Class 122(v) In a valve for controlling flow of fluid under pressure and having a valve body 1 with a valve seat 12 for a valve plug 7 screw-threaded into the valve body and rotatable by a valve stem 17, the valve stem has an ..outwardly conoidal flange 27 at the outer end of a valve body chamber 35 in which, is located a helically coiled spring 37 around the valve stem and thrusting between non-metallic seats 39, 38 at the base of the chamber 35 and beneath the conoidal flange respectively, and a gland packing consisting of alternately hard and soft plane gland rings 30, 31 encased in an annular shell 32 bears by the inner sharp circular edges 28, 29 of the gland rings on the conoidal surface of the flange under the axial pressure of a gland nut 36. The gland packing may consist of more than two rings. The annular triangular void 49 provided by the gland rings may be used for housing lubricant.
